The Honored Hero Team is a group of individuals, made mostly of blood cancer survivors, who have come together as a team to celebrate Team In Training’s (TNT) 25th anniversary. The name of our team is very fitting, since a Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Honored Hero is anyone who is being treated for, or is a survivor of, leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease or myeloma. The Honored Hero Team is made up of survivors, family members of survivors and those who have lost loved ones in their fight against blood cancer.
As a team we have a fundraising goal of $125,000, which will allow us to name a research project, and we are getting close—we are currently at $78,000! We train and fundraise in memory of three beloved individuals, Susan Conrad, Hank Brock and Remo Patri, who were on past teams with several of us and remain in our hearts. They were longtime TNT participants and LLS Honored Heroes.
On Sunday, September 29th, the Honored Hero Team will be hosting a team fundraiser called the Hero 5k Run/Walk at the Presidio Sports Basement. It starts at 9:30 am, with registration and sign in starting at 8:30 am. We encourage everyone to join us in this fun event and 100% of the entry fee will go towards the Honored Hero Team goal!
It is interesting that those of us who are survivors are considered “heroes”, when in reality, the heroes are those who support and care for us. As we go through various treatments, it is really our friends and family who are the heroes—they take us to appointments, sit with us during treatments, and visit us in the hospital, being brave and upbeat while in their hearts they are scared and fearful.
The heroes are also those who come out and participate in Team In Training with no connection to the cause, but just want to help and make a difference to those affected by blood cancer. We may have the Honored Hero title but the Hero cape is worn by many.
