It’s something often joked about – the “Team In Dating” phenom. But when you get to the heart of the matter (pun fully intended) it makes sense. You have like-minded, social individuals with common goals routinely spending quality time together and sharing a unique (and often life-changing) physical experience. It’s only natural that connections are made, friendships develop and, sometimes, love is found.
In celebration of Valentine’s Day, here’s a trio of Team In Training (TNT) love stories:
David & Katie
David and Katie met while training with the TEAM for the 2010 Honolulu Marathon. David had recently moved to the Bay Area from North Carolina and joined TNT as an alum to meet people, explore his new home and participate in a fantastic cause to help wipe out cancer.
He found a kindred soul in Katie, a mentor returning for her second season with the TEAM.
“I immediately noticed Katie’s upbeat personality and her caring nature,” recalls David. “Fortunately for me, I could keep her pace – but barely.”
David and Katie started running together during team workouts and eventually completed three full marathons and several half marathons together, many of them holding hands across the finish line.
“You really get to know someone after running with them for so many miles,” says David. “Meeting Katie through TNT was perfect because we found that we shared many common interests like being outdoors, being adventurous, and helping people. With TNT we ran marathons in Honolulu and Anchorage – how many people get to say that? But the best part of meeting through TNT, is that I found the love of my life and we’re getting married in November.”
Michelle & Nate
Michelle and Nate met in November 2009 at a Team In Training IronTeam kick-off event. They clicked during a “speed-introduction” session where they briefly discussed what they ate for dinner the night before and their dogs (prescribed topics). At the time, Nate was signing up for his first Ironman (and Team In Training event!) and Michelle was returning to IronTeam as a mentor.
At that point, Michelle had completed more than eleven TNT seasons; the TEAM was a very big part of her life. So being able to share that love with someone special was huge.
“To find someone who shares the same passion for Team In Training is amazing,” she says. “When you train with the person you are dating, you get to spend so much time together. You really get to know each other on so many different levels.”
Two years later, Michelle and Nate are taking the next step.
“We have taken this year off from the TEAM to focus on ‘us’ and our upcoming wedding in June,” says Michelle. “But we will be back!”
Rocky & Claudia
Rocky and Claudia connected at the inaugural Nike Women’s Marathon in 2004. Rocky was running with his brother toward the finish line when Claudia appeared and they briefly chatted. Smitten with the bubbly TNT team captain, Rocky later asked Coach Mama Lisa (who he worked with at the time) to pass along Claudia’s email address.
“Being the protective person she is, Coach Mama Lisa told me ‘just give me yours and I’ll pass it on to her.’ It look Claudia a month to email me,” chuckles Rocky. “Our first date was a lunch date that turned into a dinner date.”
Rocky found himself on the TNT East Bay Marathon team in the fall of 2005 and the rest, as they say, is history. The couple has been on several marathon, triathlon, and cycle teams since, and Rocky just finished his second season with IronTeam.
“It takes a lot of time and dedication to train for an endurance event while simultaneously raising funds,” says Rocky. “It’s a blessing to find a partner who not only understands this type of lifestyle, but is willing to help reach such lofty goals. Since we share the experience, we know how to support one another.”
Rocky and Claudia are the proud parents of six-month-old Sophia Grace and will be celebrating their fifth wedding anniversary this April.
There you have it. Three terrific matches with three sweet endings. Congratulations to all of our TNT couples!
